Let’s Talk About Hefeweizen

Whoever would’ve thought that notes of banana would taste good in a beer? Probably not many. We say, however, don’t knock it till you try it. The Hefeweizen has long been considered one of the most popular beers in the world. Widespread availability and easy drinking are just two of the many reasons why this style of beer has stood the test of time.

This German wheat beer was first brewed in the 1520s, in Bavarian breweries of Germany. In the beginning, there was one family to rule the production of all Hefeweizen in Bavaria. The House of Wittelsbach ruled over the entire region and controlled the brewing of the beer. The Duke of Wittelsbach, Maximilian I mandated that all breweries in the region brew this beer to his liking. It’s popularity in Bavaria lasted for a couple hundred years before it almost fell off the map completely in the 1700s. It was around this time that darker, more traditional lagers started to make a comeback, and many brewers no longer thought the Hefe was worth brewing. This seems to be a great example of over-saturation in early brewing markets.

Our Hefeweizen is brewed locally with 2-row barley, wheat and Vienna malts, and hopped with Hallertau Mittlefruh. This makes for a cloudy brew, with those famous notes of banana and clove. Unfiltered yeast and wheat allow this beer to be on the lighter side of the spectrum, but still have a bit of a bite to it, perfect for year-round enjoyment. RAM Hefeweizen has not only won the hearts of beer drinkers over the years, but four medals since 2008 as well. Don’t worry about the pronunciation or spelling, just worry about the drinking.
