RAM Brewer Bethany Carlsen Headed to World Beer Cup

April 3, 2014

LAKEWOOD, WA – The RAM Restaurant and Brewery will be well represented at the Craft Brewers Conference and World Beer Cup in Denver later this month.  Bethany Carlsen, Head Brewer from the RAM’s Puyallup South Hill location, will be among those in attendance.

Most little girls have aspirations of becoming ballerinas, supermodels, or actresses – Carlsen was no different; not even in her wildest dreams did she envision someday becoming a lady brewer. After a series of odd jobs that eventually landed her at The RAM as a server in 2010, Carlsen finally realized the direction she wanted to take her career. “I decided to get into the beer industry after I tried my hand at home brewing.  I began developing a passion for making and drinking craft beer!” Carlsen continued, “I began visiting local breweries and expanding my taste buds and knowledge.  I thought, hey why not make it my profession.” Persistence paid off as she was moved into the Assistant Brewer position at the University Village location and soon thereafter moved into the Head Brewer position at the Puyallup South Hill RAM.

A member of the “Pink Boots Society,” an organization for women who work in the beer industry, Carlsen proudly wears her steel-toed pink boots every day in the RAM Brewery. While in Denver for the World Beer Cup, Carlsen will be participating at a Pink Boots Society all-female tap takeover at a favorite craft beer establishment, Ernie’s Bar and Pizza. For a few days surrounding the World Beer Cup event all the beer served at Ernie’s will be exclusively brewed by women in the industry.  Carlsen sent a keg of her Sassy Blonde to be featured at the event.

The RAM brewers have won countless medals for their beers throughout the years with Carlsen adding her first brewing medal to the collection with a silver for her “Lady Wood” Saison at the prestigious North American Beer Awards in Idaho last year.  Originally brewed for Seattle Beer Week, The RAM thought so highly of the beer that it was entered into the competition and won big. Carlsen added, “winning was unexpected and very exciting!”

Carlsen enjoys her busy days at The RAM.  In addition to brewing award-winning beers, her duties include visiting with guests about their beer selections and explaining the different styles and tastes. She also hosts events for her Mug Club Members at the Puyallup RAM and is involved with training new hired team members. “Our service team is thoroughly trained when they join The RAM.  I give them all a tour of the brewery, a review of the brewing process and a comprehensive and in depth tasting of our flagship beers and seasonal selections; they all must pass a test at the end of the presentation.”  Carlsen added, “My favorite aspect of the job is the laid-back atmosphere and the awesome people that I meet because I am a brewer.  The industry is fun, friendly and growing!  I feel very lucky to be a part of it… and brewing a batch of delicious beer for people to enjoy is about the coolest way to get paid in my opinion!”
